Larks Head on a Ring

A doubled blue rope is attached to a shiny black rappel ring with a lark’s head. The rope enters from the left of the frame and crosses over the left side of the ring. It the crosses back under the ring and the bight of the rope goes over the standing part.

Really just a clever way to tie a lark’s head onto a ring, this is a very handy technique to have in your back pocket.

When to use it

The lark’s head on a ring is a clever way to tie a lark’s head on a ring without having to pull the entire length of the rope through the ring.

It’s the only way to tie a lark’s head onto a ring in situations where it isn’t possible to pull the entire rope through. We use it when attaching rappel rings to a bed for that reason.

Step by step

A shiny black rappel ring two and a half inches in diameter sits in the middle of the frame. The bight of a doubled blue rope enters from the right of the frame, crosses over the left side of the rappel ring, and then crosses under the right side of it. The rope has effectively passed through the rappel ring from front to back.

1Pass the bight through the ring, going over the left side of the ring and under the right side.

The bight of the rope has been expanded to make a loop that is four inches in diameter.

2Expand the bight to be a little bigger than the ring.

The bight of the rope has been flipped over, so that it encircles the ring and crosses over the standing part of the rope.

3Flip the bight over the ring.

4Pull the lark’s head snug.

References and naming

This knot is ABOK # 1673 (Cow Hitch)

Ashley gives the lark’s head on a ring its own ABOK number and name, but we respectfully disagree. To our minds, this is just an alternate way of producing a lark’s head.
